Land Acknowledgement

Land Acknowledgement - header image

We first acknowledge the ancestors and the spirits in this territory where we do this work.

Ontario's Trails cross many indigenous territories. To the north/northeast some of the trails are located on traditional Algonquin territory and is acknowledged by Indigenous Peoples as un-ceded. To the southeast, is Mohawk territory. To the west/southwest, is on Ojibwe territory.

We say “meegwech” to thank them and other indigenous Peoples for taking care of this land from time immemorial and for sharing the land with those of us who are newcomers.

Today our trails cross lands that are still home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in these communities on these territories.

Out of gratitude, we are called to treat the land and its waterways, its trails, plants, animals, stories and its people with respect.
