When we tap a tree, we drill a small hole 5/16 of an inch wide and 2 inches deep in the trunk. We drill a new hole every year and insert a new spile and then attach the spile to our pipeline network. The number of taps per tree depends on the health and size of the tree. We start tapping trees when they are 10 inches in diameter, they get a second tap at 18 inches and a third at 24 inches.
